Mirvish Productions was founded in 1986 by David Mirvish, continuing the theatrical tradition established by Ed Mirvish's purchase of the Royal Alexandra Theatre in 1962.

The Royal Alexandra is Canada's oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre. It had been run since the turn of the century as a "road house", a stage for touring shows. Mirvish Productions has now made the Royal Alexandra a producing theatre, mounting its own original shows and Canadian productions of Broadway and West End hits.

Since 1986, Mirvish Productions has produced, co-produced and presented a wide variety of theatrical shows at the Royal Alexandra, including: the world premiere musical Jane Eyre; the Peter Hall Company's staging of Ibsen's The Master Builder, starring Alan Bates; Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, with Marian Seldes; the hit musical Crazy for You, with Mickey Rooney and Barbara Hamilton; the award-winning Canadian drama Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, starring Graham Greene; Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, with Kiefer Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, and Sweet Bird of Youth, with Joanne Woodward; the phenomenal Les Miserables.
